The QR code quiet zone

Leave a clear border at least 4 modules wide on every side of a standard QR code. The margin is part of the finished print area, not spare space to crop away.

Why the empty space matters

The quiet zone separates the symbol from neighboring text, lines and pictures. Think of it as part of the code rather than the background of the design. A perfectly encoded symbol can become harder to detect when a border, crop or photograph crowds that space.

The module is the smallest square in the code. A margin specified in millimeters without considering the module size can be misleading. When the code is enlarged, its quiet zone must enlarge with it. Keeping the border inside an exported SVG or PDF makes that relationship easier to preserve.

Keep the margin through the whole workflow

Export the code with its background, then place the complete file into the layout. Do not use an automatic trim command that removes apparently empty pixels. If your printer asks for bleed, add bleed outside the QR artwork instead of using the quiet zone as a trim allowance.

A caption can sit beyond the quiet zone. Tidy QR frames put the call to action outside the blank area, so the text does not take over the scanner's separation space. Check the final exported page because a layout application can still crop or mask an otherwise correct image.

Measure an actual proof

In the worked example, count the modules across the symbol, add the margins and multiply by the intended physical module width. This gives the total space to reserve. The chosen module width is an example input; camera distance and print quality may call for more space.

Print the complete design and inspect the quiet zone on every side. Test near surrounding artwork, not only as an isolated image on your screen. If you cannot make enough room, shorten the payload or redesign the surrounding panel rather than cutting into the border.

Put this into practice in the QR generator, then inspect the decoded payload before printing.
