What the source measures

India's Economic Survey statistical appendix publishes UPI payment volume in millions of transactions, with NPCI named as the source. The table here uses complete fiscal-year observations from FY 2020-21 through FY 2024-25. It omits the later partial-year observation rather than presenting an incomplete period as directly comparable.

Fiscal years differ from calendar years. Keep the period label attached when quoting a value, and do not combine these totals with monthly figures without aligning the dates. The chart reproduces the published values, with no forecast or extrapolation.

Why these are not QR statistics

UPI is a payment system with multiple ways to initiate transactions. The source table does not isolate a QR-only channel. Calling the entire volume QR payments would change the meaning of the dataset and overstate what the source establishes.

Likewise, a payment transaction is not a unique person, merchant or scan. A customer can transact repeatedly, and an attempted scan does not necessarily produce a completed transfer. Keep those units separate when planning or evaluating a payment experience.

A worked conversion

The FY 2024-25 value is 185,866 million transactions. Dividing by 1,000 converts that to 185.866 billion transactions. The conversion changes the unit, not the scope: it remains all UPI payment volume in the reported fiscal year.

Use evidence that matches the decision

For a local QR project, test the destination on the devices your visitors actually use. Ask whether the scan leads to a useful action and whether a non-camera route is available. Broad national data cannot replace that direct usability check.

The original source is linked below so the period, population and methodology can be reviewed in context. Corrections are welcome at contact@tidyqr.com. Create a static QR code when the content and destination are ready.
